A graduate of Loughborough College of Art and Design,
Helen Rhodes holds a First Class Degree in Textile Design. She began her
own business in 1994 producing and selling original pieces of artwork,
which were rapidly acquired by prestigious galleries throughout the
country.
Helen’s interpretations which draw on all aspects of every day life
combine intensely rich colours, textures and patterns with humorous
naïve composition which are light hearted and full of fun. The torn
edges hint that each image is a fragment of a larger painting, giving an
element of preciousness to each piece. The richness of her original
mixed media work is achieved through the layering of paint and extra
depth is given by the final layer of varnish.
Delighted to be commissioned by ‘Queen’s Bone China’ to produce six mug
designs and in 1994 and again in 1995 Helen also won the Imperial Cancer
Research Christmas Card competition. This encouraged her to produce more
images for the greeting card market all of which have been highly
successful and are distributed world-wide.
Enjoying a reputation that continues to soar to new heights and with her
limited editions and silk-screens selling out on release Helen is now
also an award winner, having received the Gift of the Year 1998 and Best
Up and Coming Artist 1999. Possessing such a distinctive style, there is
no doubt that Helen will continue to enjoy phenomenal success with her
original artwork and attract an ever growing number of collectors.
“The rich colours and naïve imagery provide a great setting in which my
animal personalities can enjoy the simple pleasures in life”.
